Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a 3rd wave Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) that has been proven to be effective for a wide range of psychological and emotional difficulties. It’s especially well-suited for people who struggle with difficult internal experiences, like distressing thoughts, strong emotions, life challenges or physical discomfort, and who have lost touch with what really matters to them as a result. Rather than trying to eliminate or avoid uncomfortable emotions like anxiety, sadness, or frustration, ACT teaches ways to respond when these show up, without getting overwhelmed or stuck by them, which in turn allows you to be freer to do the things that matter (such as being present with friends and family).
ACT can help with:
Emotional or psychological distress:
- Anxiety disorders (including generalised anxiety, social anxiety, panic disorder, phobias and health anxiety)
- Depression and low mood
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and trauma-related difficulties
- Perfectionism and high self-criticism
- Low self-esteem and difficulties with self-worth
- Chronic stress and burnout
- Anger difficulties
Physical Health and Long-Term Conditions:
- Chronic pain or health conditions (e.g. fibromyalgia, IBS, long COVID)
- Health anxiety
- Adjustment to illness, injury, or disability
Life Transitions and Identity:
- Grief and loss
- Relationship challenges
- Identity issues (including gender, sexuality, cultural identity)
- Navigating major life changes (e.g. career, parenthood, retirement)
